UK Integrated Online Tariff – what it is and why it matters for importers and exporters

For businesses involved in international trade classification requirements are an essential element in establishing customs, VAT and excise duties. However, with rules changing regularly, keeping up to date with classifications can be a challenge.

HMRC’s UK Integrated Online Tariff (often referred to as the Trade Tariff tool) has become a key resource to support businesses importing into or exporting from the UK.

What is the UK Integrated Online Tariff?

The UK Integrated Online Tariff is HMRC’s official online service that allows businesses to:

  • Find commodity codes for goods being imported or exported
  • Check applicable duty and VAT rates
  • Identify any reliefs, suspensions or reductions
  • Review licensing requirements or additional measures such as quotas or anti-dumping duties

Commodity codes are a critical part of the process. They provide the classification codes of goods for customs purposes and advise:

  • the rates of customs, VAT and excise is payable, and
  • what rules or restrictions apply to the goods.

These codes must be included on customs declarations to ensure the correct amount of tax is paid and to avoid delays or penalties.

Keeping up with changes – a more dynamic tool

One of the key developments in recent years is how the tariff is now maintained and updated. The UK tariff is dynamic, with frequent changes reflecting new trade agreements, duty updates, and legislative changes.

HMRC has made this easier to manage by improving how updates are communicated within the system. For example:

  • Businesses can view updates and changes through tariff news and “stop press” notices directly within the tool
  • More significantly, recent enhancements allow users to set tailored alerts on specific commodity codes or tariff areas
  • This means businesses can be notified when something changes that affects their goods, rather than manually checking the tariff on a regular basis

This shift helps ensure businesses are working with the most current information and reduces the risk of errors or outdated assumptions.

Why this is a useful tool for businesses

The Online Tariff can now have a central role in compliance, rather than as just a reference tool driving cost management and operational efficiency by allowing data accuracy.

1. Ensures the correct duty and VAT is applied

Using the correct commodity code ensures that businesses pay the right amount of duty and VAT, helping to avoid underpayments, penalties or overpayments.

2. Supports accurate customs declarations

Commodity codes are mandatory for customs declarations, and errors can lead to shipment delays, additional checks or financial exposure.

3. Improves visibility of total landed cost

By checking duty rates, VAT and any applicable reliefs, businesses can better understand the full cost of importing or exporting goods.

4. Reduces administrative burden

With the ability to monitor updates and receive alerts, businesses can spend less time manually reviewing tariff changes and more time focusing on core operations.

5. Helps maintain compliance in a changing environment

Trade rules continue to evolve; the EU recently set out their pathway for Customs modernisation for 2028 - 2032 and beyond including a single customs data system for the whole EU. Having access to a live, up-to-date tool supports ongoing compliance and reduces the risk of errors.

Practical considerations

While the tool is powerful, it relies on accurate input. To find the correct commodity code, businesses need detailed knowledge of their goods, including:

  • the type of product
  • how it is used
  • the materials it is made from
  • how it is produced or packaged

In practice, classification can be complex, particularly for businesses dealing with multiple products, partial classifications, or goods with mixed use.
